12 Sep How to Dance Diversely with Limited Vocabulary
In a previous post, I showed why dancing with a few steps is better, at least for most human beings with a normal memory capacity.
A concern is that dancing with such limited vocabulary will be boring. However, the power of combination and timing prevents such boredom. If one dances even with only walking forward, back, left, and right on each count, for an 8-count phrase (thus taking 8 walking steps), there are 8,748 different ways (4 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3) to dance that one phrase. If one adds pause to every three walking steps, for the 8-count phrase he/she will have 972 additional ways to dance. If one adds double time to every second counts, for the 8-count phrase he/she will have 708,588 more ways to dance. With other rhythmic patterns, he/she will have even more ways to dance. Thus, with only walking forward, backward, left, and right, there are already more than a million ways to dance just the one 8-count phrase. Walking outside the partner will double the number. On top of this, turning to the left and turning to the right can be added, and a couple of your favorite things (e.g. a sacada turn instead of a normal turn, a sandwich, and etc.) can be added also, thereby increasing the diversity of your dance even more. Then, there are subtle nuances of movement (e.g. rhythmic walking vs. lyrical walking), which will multiply the number yet again.
Rhythmic diversity and combination of the few things in your vocabulary are enough to create a very complex choreography. With that covered, the more important is to sync what you feel and what you do with the music while enjoying the embrace of you and your partner.
